Reproductive freedom for all ♀

About

I chose OB/GYN above other medical and surgical specialties because I wanted to develop long-term relationships and care for my patients over the course of their lifetimes.

As a surgeon and provider, I find caring for the female reproductive system very rewarding. One of the most important roles as an OB/GYN is to listen carefully to my patients. I take this information to then provide detailed explanations and education to patient concerns so each woman feels empowered to make the best decision possible about her individual care.

Dr. Susan West was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs and first came to North Carolina for medical school at Wake Forest University in 1987. She moved back to the Midwest for her residency in Indianapolis from 1991-1995, returning to the mountains of North Carolina after graduation in July, 1995.

As Chief Resident of her training program in 1995, Dr. West also received the national Outstanding Resident in Laparoscopy Award given by the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.

Dr. West has over 25 years of experience as a gynecologic surgeon, with special emphasis on minimally invasive hysteroscopic and laparoscopic surgeries. She joined Laurel OB/GYN in August 1995 and has practiced here ever since. She is passionate in educating her patients about their medical conditions and detailing their treatment options so each woman is able to make educated, informed decisions about her care.

Dr. West currently serves as President of the Southern OB/GYN Seminar, a Southeastern OB/GYN educational society that has hosted annual medical conferences for over 100 OB/GYNs in Asheville for more than 65 years.

In addition to practicing as a physician, Dr West is also a musician. She began playing piano at age 4, and the flute at age 12.  She continued to study flute performance all through college and still enjoys playing both instruments today.

Dr. West thoroughly enjoys spending time with her husband and two sons, in addition to lots of cooking, and traveling–preferably to skiing destinations. She has been fortunate to have lived in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Texas, California, and North Carolina but is happy to have called Asheville her home for over 25 years. She and her husband Jeremiah also love to travel, having visited multiple countries on four different continents together. They hope to make Australia the 5th continent on their list very soon!

she works for Laruel OBGYN in Asheville. I recently went to ask for sterilization. I am 26 woman with no children. I had the best doctor’s experience I’ve ever had there. She asked me thoughtful questions without being judgmental and with no pressure. She supported my decision for a tubal ligation while answering all of my specific questions about the surgery. She also gave me a great suggestion to get genetic testing to advocate for a salpingectomy instead of a tubal ligation (There is quite a few individuals in my family with breast cancer).
